Group Announcements Proposed FY2011 Budget and CISLThe Superintendent presented his proposed 2010-2011 budget to the School Board at this week's School Board meeting. He will be presenting this again to the public on Monday, February 8 at 6 pm. at Stonewall Jackson High School. You may also view this presentation on the pwcs.edu Web site. After Monday's presentation, the School Board will hold a public hearing. Wine and Cheese Event PostponedBecause of weather conditions, our CISL Boosters Wine and Cheese Event scheduled for Saturday, February 6, has been postponed. Our new date is Saturday, March 20, at Wegmans from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. We hope that many of you will be able to attend. Cost is $30 per person, which includes a $10 gift card to use at Wegmans and a $5 CISL donation that will help cover costs for our CISL Conference on March 6. Ice Cream Social for CISL Families On Wednesday, March 17 CISL Boosters is sponsoring an Ice Cream Social at 7p.m. in the enclosed cafeteria. This is a great time to come in, share time with other CISL student families, & have dessert (or a backward dinner that starts with dessert!). Reserve the date! Entry amount to be decided at next Boosters meeting.
Boosters help needed for CISL Conference DayOn Saturday, March 6 we will be helping at the CISL Conference. This is a wonderful day filled with interesting topics to learn about. CISL Boosters provides both a light breakfast and lunch with food from various restaurants in the Woodbridge area. It's also a nice day to spend with your child, meeting their friends and friends' parents. We will need volunteers to help over the course of the day but shifts are not that long; feel free to help as much or as little as you want (or not at all but just come & enjoy the conference).
CISL Boosters meeting February 1On Monday, February 1 we will have our February meeting & our Pampered Chef kick-off. Tress Billy, a CISL parent will be there with delicious samples and pamphlets for you to look over. Even though there is no school for the kids that day, Hylton will be open and our meeting will occur in the library. The Booster Board meets at 6:30 p.m. with the general meeting starting at 7:15 p.m. This meeting is also when we will discuss details of the CISL Conference. If you can't attend, Pampered Chef pamphlets will be available to your student at the February 4th CISL student meeting. You can also order online.
Reminder for our Wine and Cheese tasting eventCISL Boosters is holding a wine, cheese, & olive tasting at Wegman's in Woodbridge on Saturday, February 6th from 5-7pm in the upstairs dining area. This is new for CISL Boosters & we are very excited about it. The flyer in CISL files with a reservation form at the bottom needs to be returned to Mrs. Holt quickly. Space is limited to 40 people so make your reservations early. This event is both a Booster get together and a fundraiser for the March CISL Conference. The cost is $30 per person. $25 is the cost Wegman's charges but those who come will receive a $10 Wegman's gift card to spend however they want at Wegman's. $5 will help defray costs of the CISL Conference. So, the true cost to you is $20 per person. Make it a date with a friend or spouse; invite your neighbors or adult family members. So many people wrote afterwards of the effectiveness of the event in understanding world poverty and hunger. Sally Foster Orders are Coming!If you placed an order for Sally Foster products through our recent fundraiser, you and/or your parents will be able to pick up your orders on Wednesday evening, November 18, between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. outside my office on A street. If for any reason you are unable to come, please let me know in advance so that the parent volunteers are not waiting for you to arrive. We will then try to deliver the products to you in class during the last period on Thursday, November 19. Temporary Host Family NeededWe are looking for a host family for a French student for Friday and Saturday, with the French student returning to the original host family on Sunday afternoon/evening depending n your plans. This is an unavoidable circumstance on the part of the original host family. The French exchange student will be able to attend all the homecoming events and on Saturday will be visiting Mount Vernon with the group so there are no additional activities to be planned.
Please let Mrs. Holt know if you are able to help us. Foreign Exchange Opportunities!Four great opportunities are right around the corner for you to travel to one of the following destinations in 2010 and/or 2011!
We have two exchange programs where you step right into the culture of another country, and stay with a family in either Dijon, France, or Verona, Italy, just like our recent guests from Verona and those who are about to arrive from Dijon. Experience this discovery without your family and usual friends here at Hylton and enjoy seeing new sites, eating new foods, meeting new people, hearing a different language! You will be amazed and will always remember this high school experience. You travel over spring break.
We also have an educational tour of England, Wales and Ireland! For this tour, you stay in hotels throughout your visit, and have expert guided tours of historic sites in these three countries as well as see the beautiful countryside along the way. You travel in early summer 2010.
If you would like to hear more information about any of these programs, come to one or all of the following information evenings. On the 22nd you can certainly get information from both rooms. At the French exchange evening, you will also meet many of the French students from Dijon who will be hosting us in the spring! Hear from them about your stay!

These three trips are all approved by Prince William County Schools. They are all officially part of the CISL program. CISL students will receive priority if more than the maximum number of students apply. All applications will be reviewed by Hylton faculty before approval is given.
There is a 4th exchange program to Germany. Students who study German are invited to be part of this county-wide program which involves a 6 week stay, enrolled in school in Germany in the summer of 2011. Students of German will be given the opportunity to be part of the 2010-11 program in the spring.
US FreedomwalkSaturday, October 17, the day we partner with the US Freedom Walk Festival in Washington DC is almost here! Thank you to all the students who have volunteered to help at the two embassy sites of El Salvador and the Korus House, part of the Embassy of Korea. Permission slips have gone out to those students who signed up. Please return your forms if you haven't already done so. Parents, if you are willing to drive, the form is attached to the student forms.
Once all papers are returned, we will determine who is driving to which embassy and at what time. As indicated on the permission form, there are two shifts: 7 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. If in the afternoon we are given the signal that all walkers have passed through our checkpoint, we will be able to leave, possibly earlier than the stated time. If you didn't receive the paperwork but want to help, please pick up a form from my door pocket. If you have not signed up to help, you can always walk! We were sorry that Boosters president, Mindy Higgins, was unable to join us. She had to attend a funeral in Rhode Island and was not able to return in time for our meal. ![]() Burundi Car Wash Thank You!To the 50 CISL students, their parents and all who helped with donations of supplies or more for the car wash in aid of our partner school in If you brought buckets, towels or cleaning supplies that you need back, please check with me as soon as possible. I washed the towels that we had and we can always keep these for next time if you don't need them back. Thank you again! For points, I will record all students who signed in and out, one point per hour's work. You don't need to complete an additional form for the car wash. AIU High School Diplomats ProgramThe AIU High School Diplomats program brings American and Japanese high school students together at There is an application process for participation in the program. It is limited to 40 participants. All current sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply. Japanese language is not a pre-requisite. Full scholarships are awarded to the student participants in the program. The dates are July 28 - National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)We want to announce to you a program of the U.S. Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y). Merit-based scholarships for eligible American high school students are being made available for the study of less commonly taught languages in summer, semester, and academic year overseas immersion programs. NSLI-Y encourages American citizen 15-18 year olds with any level of language experience who have a passion for communicating across cultures, learning languages and living abroad to apply. In 2010/11, there are seven languages: Arabic, Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Turkish, and Russian. The Russian component of NSLI-Y is one of the program’s largest; in 2010/11 there will be 85 summer slots for Russian alone! Scholarships provide full funding with minimal cost to the family of the student. A 2.5 minimum GPA is required.
